Walk My Way at Walthew House, 112 Shaw Heath, Stockport SK2 6QS
As the Walthew House weekly Walking Group are unable to meet at Stockport Harriers Athletic Track, the Making More Happen Project created ‘WalkMyWay’ which is tailored one to one support and offers a guided walk close to the service user’s home for people with a sight loss who are long cane users or people with a sensory loss who are extremely isolated.
This has proven to benefit both physical and mental health and the feedback has been really positive. Walthew House are looking for volunteers to walk with Visually impaired people who use Long canes. Staff are finding that some visually impaired people are starting to lose their confidence using their sticks and also going out side due to the Lockdowns.
The people who require help are mobile and do not need assistance in walking. A running commentary is required from the volunteer to the visually impaired person. Volunteers will be given an induction with a member of the Walthew House Team who would go out with both the volunteer and visually impaired person to show what’s required in the role and to see if everyone gets along.
Volunteers do not have to be DBS checked but that would be preferable where possible.
Given the success of the new service, Walthew House are looking for more volunteers so that they can continue to offer this service and help more people. If you have a full clean driving license and are happy to offer some fresh air and exercise to our service users please get in touch!
