NCS Local Community Experiences

Young people who participate in NCS local community experiences can take part in projects designed to develop their transferable skills and prepare them for the world of work and independent living. They will also have the opportunity to design and implement social action projects to make a difference in their local communities.

Each community experience is 16 hours long, but each programme is different depending on after-school, weekend and holiday availability, giving plenty of flexibility to fit into young people’s busy lives. Throughout the programme, young people will have opportunities to develop skills, make new friends and have fun.

Young people who take part in these experiences will have opportunities to:

  • develop life skills that will help them to prepare for independent living,
  • build employability and work-readiness skills,
  • take part in volunteering and social action opportunities, and
  • mix with young people from different backgrounds and have fun in a social setting.

TikTok Creative Academy

TikTok Creative Academy provides industry insight into the creative and digital sectors, along with access to creative professionals who will be sharing their experiences and teaching young people how to get a start in the creative world, including how to build a portfolio, how to create a creative CV and how to interview for those positions.

We are aiming to support over 2,500 young people who are not in education, employment or training to get closer to a creative job by 2024.

Participants on the TikTok Creative Academy programme have access to:

  • a 3-4 week employability course and guidance through technical qualifications and achieving accreditation, as well as online courses,
  • career coach who will guide each participant to identify their goals and complete a bespoke action plan to reach them; TikTok employees will provide advice and coaching at peer-led workshops,
  • access to opportunities to further build their industry specific skills such as virtual work experience, jobs fairs, mentoring and networking events,
  • wider support on mental health or housing issues, and
  • access to a bursary which will support participants as they go through the programme, as well as a laptop loan scheme, developed to tackle digital exclusion.

Digital Edge with Microsoft

Co-designed by Catch22 and Microsoft, Digital Edge finds and recruit candidates aged 18 and above with a range of challenges – from gender and ethnicity barriers, homelessness, mental health issues, school exclusion and disability. It then supports them to access a digital apprenticeship and entry level IT job with a local employer within Microsoft’s network of customers and partners.

Digital Edge aims to understand what can help broaden the opportunity of an apprenticeship and entry level IT job to those who currently face barriers to access the programme, and what support employers looking to diversify their workforce might need.

By the end of the three- or four-week programme, participants should have:

  • an understanding of digital apprenticeships and entry-level IT jobs,
  • an insight into the digital and technology sector,
  • awareness of key employability skills,
  • learned how to complete a tailored CV, cover letter, and applications for the technology sector,
  • developed their interview skills and techniques, and
  • the ability to set future career goals.

Once the programme is completed, participants can access ongoing one-to-one employability support.
