If you’re stuck in a job that isn’t for you or you’re ready for a change but don’t know where to start, don’t worry. Over the course of the last few years in particular, changing careers or industry sectors is more common than you’d think.

For some, a career change becomes an attractive prospect when you’ve reached your limit in your current role and aren’t able to progress any further. For others, it may be prompted by a change in circumstances that mean you need a different type or way of working. It could simply be that you’ve put it off for a while now and are ready to take the leap.

When you’re thinking about starting something new, there’s a few important things to consider:
  • Flexibility – when changing roles, you might not find your ‘dream job’ immediately. You may need to take a cut in salary, start at a lower job level, change your working hours or have a different commute for example. Try to be flexible and accept you may need to show your new company your value before negotiating or earning more rewards.
  • Reality – when making a big change, use your existing transferable skills and experience to move into a sector that will find these an asset and put them to good use. Be realistic about your aspirations, research your options thoroughly and make informed decisions that will help you move into your new role quickly.
  • Support – remember that career changes take time, patience and planning but that big journeys are easier with the right support in place. Find out about local services that can help you during this time and ensure your transition is successful.
